Do you want to stop smoking? You’ve probably heard of electronic cigarettes as a method of quitting. We tell you the risks and benefits of using this system.
The first thing you need to know is what an electronic cigarette is and how it works.
The electronic cigarette, also known as e-cig or e-cigarette, landed on the market ostensibly to treat nicotine addiction and promote quitting.
Electronic cigarettes are devices that use a small battery to heat a liquid solution (e-liquid) and produce smoke vapor. The aim is to simulate the experience of smoking a cigarette but without burning or inhaling the harmful substances in tobacco.
What are the benefits of using an electronic cigarette?
The main benefit of the electronic cigarette is that it can be used during a specific time (between one or two months) to stop smoking definitively or to reduce the consumption of tobacco.
Other advantages they may have over traditional tobacco may be:
Exposure to chemicals that in principle appear less toxic than those present in conventional cigarettes.
No yellowing of the teeth.
It does not cause a bad smell and is less polluting.
It is cheaper.
The smoke seems to be less toxic.
But are these advantages real? Let’s look at the risks of using the electronic cigarette.
It is not always possible to stop smoking. In addition, a high percentage of e-cig users continue to use it indefinitely and even continue to smoke tobacco. In many cases the dose of nicotine is not reduced and the addiction continues.
Its use is spreading, especially among young people, for purposes other than quitting smoking. There are people who use the electronic cigarette without having smoked previously.
The consequences of prolonged use are unknown; and it is not really known whether they are safer than tobacco in the long term.
They are not free of toxins and there is no scientific evidence that they are safer than conventional cigarettes.
Among the substances found in the e-Liquid is nicotine (there are also those without nicotine), which in addition to being highly addictive, has very harmful effects on health. There is a great variability in nicotine content between different brands and models and in some cases they may contain the same amount of nicotine as regular cigarettes.
In addition to nicotine, other chemicals that are toxic and carcinogenic have also been detected in the solution.
Studies show that inhaled vapor causes irritation of the respiratory tract and inflammatory reaction in the lungs.
Therefore, using the electronic cigarette for a short period of time to quit smoking can be definitely beneficial and not carry any major health risks. However, they are not risk-free and the consequences of prolonged use are not clear. More scientific evidence is needed to provide consumers of electronic cigarettes with reliable data to assess the risks and benefits of electronic cigarettes.
